Artefact hosted an IxDA event in June, which focused on the growing topic of Natural User Interfaces (NUIs). One of our speakers is pictured in the center, Dennis Wixon, a pioneer in HCI and NUIs and a collaborator with us on our recent NUI Manifesto project that I worked on and completed. To get ready for the event, Microsoft Surface lent us a couple of their multitouch tables. We also built our own do-it-yourself multitouch tables along with other working demos of exploratory and tangible NUI interfaces. Read the full article about the event here.

Bill Buxton recently visited Artefact, where I was able to discuss with him the method of Experiential Prototyping and how it influences the design process. During his visit, he demonstrated how you can sell a design by mimicking the experience on the spot, and that the best way to know how something works is by making it yourself. Together, these examples make a great case on the power of prototyping and experimentation as a way to understand things. Read the full article on his visit here.

One of my projects that demonstrates “Experiential Prototyping” and the method of using “Blank Devices” in the interaction design process is featured in the new book The New Ecology of Things (NET) available at amazon.com. Go get yourself one here! Authors include: Phillip Van Allen, Bruce Sterling, Anne Burdick, Holly Willis, Nikolaus Hafermaas, Brenda Laurel

I’ll be presenting new methods of experience design including the use of “blank devices” and “experiential prototyping” at UpNext 2007 in Los Angeles on Marh 8th. I will also be showing examples from various Microsoft groups that demonstrate the methods in practice. UpNext 2007 is a “bi-annual conference on the future of media design held at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. This year’s theme is the Long Zoom, a dialogue about how designers need to jump between the macro and the micro as they are called upon to imagine systems, services, ecologies, experiences, and networks.” Stay tuned for more on the event.

Thanks to friends like Nikolai Cornell and Adriana Parcero, I have been inspired to finally jump on the Wordpress bandwagon. This is the first post among many that will document progress with ongoing investigations toward new methods of interaction and user experience at Microsoft, my personal ongoing research, and beautiful discoveries that I can’t help but share.
